  • VPN PPTP - Error 691, Event 20014

    hi all, i am having some problems with a VPN setup, on a member server in a domain. there appears to be nothing wrong with the server connecting to the domain as i can log in with my domain account. so far i have;

set up RRAS on the new server (server 2003 standard, SP2)
added the server to the RAS and IAS servers group
granted access to my account in AD users and computers, dial in properties

forwarded the relevant ports on my router

set up a VPN dialup connection on a client machine (XP Pro SP3) with default settings, but with the domain specified

when i attempt to dial in, i get error 691 - access denied, username or password invalid on domain. in the event log for the RRAS server it shows every attempt i make to dial in, so connectivity has been established but i am unable to authenticate.

the event ID is 20014 - user connected, unable to authenticate, disconnected - but i have tried using an incorrect username and/or password, and i am then asked for the correct username/password, so it does know if i log in with valid credentials or not.

i'm not sure how to proceed, if anyone can suggest anything i would be grateful. i have searched around and others seem to have the same problem but the solutions that work for them haven't worked for me, or were in scenarios that didn't apply in my case. please let me know if you need any further details.

    thanks in advance

Which authentication methods are you using?
Chap? MSchap (V1/V2) or maybe PEAP?

Re: VPN PPTP - Error 691, Event 20014

      thanks for the reply,

on the server, EAP, MS-CHAP, MS-CHAPv2

on the client it is set as the default. if i enable advanced settings and take a look at the settings its just MS-CHAP and MS-CHAPv2. it is also set to require secured password.

virtually all the settings are on defaults. if i change anything and it doesn't work, i set it back to what it was.

EDIT: a 2nd XP Pro client has the same problem

        Try disabling the EAP authentication.

thanks for the suggestion, but no change i'm afraid. i still get the same error and event ID. i tried restarting the RRAS server to be sure but didn't seem to make a difference.

Can you make a screenshot of the authentication tab?

Have you seen this one too?

Have you also (re-)checked your RRAS policies that users are allowed to connect?

Re: VPN PPTP - Error 691, Event 20014

the solutions in that link didn't help, but i took a look at the policies. it appears to not be seeing the domain properly as i can't assign users or groups from AD properly so perhaps thats it. but i am going to leave this for the time being, due to other factors this server will now need to become a domain controller itself, and it will take time to migrate everything from the current DC so the VPN will have to wait.

i hope once the VPN server is also the server to which accounts authenticate to, the problems will disappear. if not i will no doubt ask for your help again. thanks very much for your help so far Dumber, i'll let you know how it works out.

EDIT: didn't take as long as i thought. the new server is now a DC, and VPN works by the looks of it. thanks again for your help.
