  • Building small office network with router, switch using VLAN

    Hi All.

At first, I am not network enginer specialist. I just want to build my office networking. Here my networks equipments:

    - 2 ADSL modem + router (each has line from my ISP)
    - 3Com Baseline 2426 PWR-Plus (http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/d...htype=purchase)

At this time, my office has about 30 PCs and will be expanding soon, that's why i want to use VLAN. This my first time using SWITCH with VLAN feature, here my problems:

    1. Make VLANs and all of them can access the internet
    2. Use Linux based PC Router (with PROXY server/SQUID)
    3. Setup a File Server, all VLAN has access into the server
    4. The 2 ISP line performing load-balance

I have drawn the network plan in this thread attachment, please correct if i had made mistaken here .

I'll monitor this thread and make reponse ASAP.
    Thanks for your times.

Is there a reason you need to split your netwrok into VLAN's??

Its easy enough to set them up but why.

Too many people are trying to make there networks too complicated these days lol.

I need to do the same configuration, I have given up on 3 Com their support site S__Cks.

As fars as I know you need to set up at least two VLAN's and possibley a third which is the one that connects to the router - as at least one port has to be untagged that may means that VLAN three has to have two ports but that would be a waste of a port. Have you tried anything yourself yet?

You need a router that supports ports in trunking mode or has enough ports to assign each vlan to its own port; meaning you will have three cables going from your switch to router.

          Thanks

I am using a sonicwall 2040 that supports VLAN tagging so I will only have one cable form my switch to my firewall. I need to know how I get 2 VLAn's configured on my 3 Com 2226 switch talking to my firewall via one port

You need to configure a trunk for that..
How to do that on a 3com and a sonicwall... Well I don't know

But the termology might help you further.

On the 3Com you would select a port then set it to be a default member of one of the VLANs and a tagged member of the remaining VLANs. This is pretty simple from the GUI.

No idea on the Sonicwall. In Juniperland its called a subinterface. You would create one subinterface per tagged VLAN.
