  • 2 Nic on 2 different subnet

    Hi there,
I have a Virtual Window Server 2003 that has 2 Virtual NICs on it. The Host server also has 2 physical NICs.
    Host server NICs setup:
    NIC1 (LAN): 192.168.1.200
    Gateway: 192.168.1.254
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0

    NIC2 (WAN): 66.60.210.68
    Gateway: 66.60.210.67
    Subnet: 255.255.255.248

    Virtual Server Steup:
    NIC1 (LAN): 192.168.1.201
    Gateway: 192.168.1.254
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0

    NIC2 (WAN): 66.60.210.69
    Gateway: 66.60.210.67
    Subnet: 255.255.255.248

NIC1 on Virtual Server bridge to NIC1 on Hostserver
NIC2 on Virtual Server bridge to NIC2 on Hostserver

I also setup static route on each server to route to the special network:
    Host server:
    0.0.0.0 255.255.255.248 66.60.210.67
    192.168.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.254

    Guest server:
    0.0.0.0 255.255.255.248 66.60.210.67
    192.168.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.254

Basically i try to setup the network so that external user can access to our website through the IP address: 66.60.210.69 on my virtual server. Local user will use the LAN connection. I was able to do that and it has been working fine for 2 weeks. However, this morning, when i come in. The Local Network(NIC1) doesn't respond to the request connection. It just refuse all the connection (All connection goes through NIC2 (WAN)). I have to disable the WAN(NIC2) on the Guest server and the LAN(NIC1) start pickup the connection.
Do you have any suggestion on this problem?

Re: 2 Nic on 2 different subnet

    Hi,

I know the configuration i am going to tell you will look very strange to some guys but believe it will work.................

Add two gateways on both NICs when you will do this and press apply it will give a warning on any one NIC ignore it and see it will work

    Host server:

    NIC1 (LAN): 192.168.1.200
    Gateway: 192.168.1.254
    : 66.60.210.68
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0

    NIC2 (WAN): 66.60.210.68
    Gateway: 66.60.210.67
    : 192.168.1.200
    Subnet: 255.255.255.248

    Add the routes as below:

    0.0.0.0 255.255.255.248 66.60.210.68
    192.168.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.200

On virtual server do it as below:

    NIC1 (LAN): 192.168.1.201
    Gateway: 192.168.1.254
    : 66.60.210.69
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0

    NIC2 (WAN): 66.60.210.69
    Gateway: 66.60.210.67
    :192.168.1.201
    Subnet: 255.255.255.248

    and routes as below:

    0.0.0.0 255.255.255.248 66.60.210.69
    192.168.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.201

    And it will work..........

      kapilsharma11,
Why do we have to setup the default gateway as the IP address on the route setup? I will try that but it look weird to me to do that.
Are you trying to let 2 network connect together.
Thank you very much. I will do it tonight.

            Hmmm.

I already told that I am not sure and it looks weird but it's working the same way for one of our client........

But I am sure that we could get better reponse on it if posted under "Networking" Tab.

So I would request moderator to move it under "Networking"

Re: 2 Nic on 2 different subnet

I did try it last night and it wont' help, i think some thing wrong with the software that we are using that block it from access to the server. Since the website still working find internal and external. I can ping the server but can't use the software only. I will get with the software company to work on that. Sorry i post from wrong place. Please move to the networking tab.
