  • Netbeui vs Ipx/Spx Home File Sharing

I read Daniel Petri's warnings about disabling netbios and not using it for file sharing. I was about to install Netbeui on my windows xp pro machines and my windows 2003 server (used as programming workstation) for file sharing, when I read somewhere that the Ipx/Spx protocol is now preferred. However, I think I have to turn on netbios to use it. Which method is more secure for sharing files between a few computers on a local home router network???

    Just use tcp/ip.

Yeah, but I thought tcp/ip was the most dangerous of all to use, because it is routable outside my local network????

        no of course not.
TCP/IP is the common standard and yes it's routable. However most devices won't support IPX/SPX or netbui anymore. Or at least the numbers are getting down.
Also if you want to use internet you need tcp/ip.
futhermore, if you setup you're firewall correctly what is you're fear then?

And if you want to secure tcp/ip go for ipsec, however make sure you're know what you're doing!

If you use a private IP address like 192.168.x.x then that will not route outside your local network. You will have to NAT it to get it outside your local network.

And how will you use this forum if you stop using TCP/IP? How will you send email? How will you chat with your pals? Not to mention those "other" sites...
