  • Connecting to PIX VPN with Win7 Client

I have a VPN set up on a PIX 501 which works fine when connecting to it through the WinXP builtin VPN client (pptp), iPhone VPN client, iPad VPN client and MAC OS X VPN client. I recently got a few Win7 laptops. I setup the Win7 builtin VPN client with the following parameters under the Security tab of the client:

    TYPE OF VPN: Automatic
DATA ENCRYPTION: Require Encryption (disconnect if server declines)
AUTHENTICATION: Allow These Protocols - CHAP, MS-CHAP V2

The VPN on the PIX 501 is configured under L2TP/PPTP CLIENT SETTING:

    GENERAL INFORMATION: PPTP
AUTHENTICATION: CHAP, MSCHAP; Enable MPPE Encryption-Auto-Required
    USER AUTHENTICATION: Local User Database

When I try to connect with the Win7 VPN client, I get the following sequence of events:

    Verifying username and password
Connecting to <ip address> using WAN Miniport (SSTP)
    Disconnected
A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or connected host has failed to respond.

I then change the the TYPE OF VPN parameter to 'PPTP" from Automatic in the Win7 client since I saw it was trying to connect with SSTP. I then get the following when I try to connect:

Error 628: the connection was terminated by the remote computer before it could be completed.

I use the same user account and can connect via XP, iphone, ipad and mac os x without a problem. This is driving me nuts! Any help is greatly appreciated.

PIX only supports MS-CHAP v1. When Vista was released they stopped supporting it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926170

Here is another option to try: http://support.dmu.edu/VistaAndCiscoPIXPPTP/index.html
    CCNA, Network+
