  • Question about Console & AUX port

    Hi,

Please correct me if I’m wrong. This is my understanding about console port.
Normally we can find these two ports at the back of network devices such as pix/asa firewalls, routers and switches.

We need to use console port with console cable to configure network device for the first time where no ip address assigned to the device yet. The software that we need is Hyper Terminal. Is there any other software we can use to connect thru console port? Is it possible to use putty to connect to console port?

AUX port? I never used it before. Any idea what is the purpose of AUX port? And how to connect to it.

    Thanks for your advice.

Re: Question about Console & AUX port

AUX port is typically used to connect out-of-band by a modem, but is not limited to just that. The console port is your main connection point when you initially configure the device. Putty only supports the Telnet/SSH protocols. For console access (on Windows), you can use:

    Hyper Terminal
CRT/Secure CRT (not free, although trial is available)
    Poderosa
    Tera Term

Re: Question about Console & AUX port

we have the aux port on our 877 connected to our patch panel via rollover cable, then the serial console cable is connected to the patch panel and then comes ou ton the port next to one of the engineer stations and straight into the serial port..

saves us havin to go into the comms room if things go up in the air
