  • Dot1q encap on 10Gb

We just installed a ws-x6716-10g-3c 10Gb card in our 6509. Also updated the firmware to the latest.

Trying to set dot1q encap on a port and I don't seem to have that selection available? Trunk mode is set. Here is what I have so far:

    switchport
    switchport access vlan 56
    switchport trunk native vlan 56
    switchport mode trunk

    'switchport trunk ?' shows only:

allowed Set allowed VLAN characteristics when interface is in trunking mode
native Set trunking native characteristics when interface is in trunking mode
pruning Set pruning VLAN characteristics when interface is in trunking mode

    What am I missing?

That platform may only support dot1q. Most of the newer stuff doesn't support ISL trunking anymore. So it looks like the default on that card.

Also why do you have switchport access vlan 56 on a trunk port? Its either gonna be a trunk or an access port but not both.

Ah, ok well that makes sense. I did a sh int trunk, but I don't see those ports I configured, guess that is because they are currently down.

Any other way I can verify .1q on those ports?

Yes you could try show int "interface name" switchport

Once the trunk ports are up you will see the encapsulation type in the show int trunk output. You may want to check out the cisco feature navigator to confirm it supports dot1q only or isl only. I'm betting its do1q only though but you never know.

Yup you're right. A trunk port will pass all vlans. Didnt think about that, and I'm surprised that it allowed me to do it.

'show int "interface name" switchport' shows:

            Administrative Trunking Encapsulation: dot1q

            I think we're good.
