  • Trunk port AND Access Port?

    Hi Guys,

I was working on some devices when I saw the config below on some 6500s:

    switchport access vlan 100
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport trunk allowed
    switchport nonegotiate

What I did not understand was how the port could be both an access port AND a trunk? I thought the two were mutually exclusive?

1)Is this just a config mistake?
2)If not, in what instances would this be deployed?
3)How does the port treat the traffic.. tagged or untagged?

    Thanks for the help!

Re: Trunk port AND Access Port?

    switchport access vlan 100

This command does NOT set the interface to access mode. It only sets access mode characteristics of the interface; in this case vlan 100 is assigned to the interface when in access mode.

    switchport mode access

Sets the interface to access mode.

    Therefore:

1)Is this just a config mistake? not necessarily
2)If not, in what instances would this be deployed?
    I do not know.
3)How does the port treat the traffic.. tagged or untagged?
Tagged, since the mode has been set to trunking; unless the vlan assigned in trunking mode is 'native'.

    Hope this helps.

    regards
