If line protocol is down that means layer 2 isnt working. Is the port connecting to the switch in a up/up state? Check for speed duplex mismatches. Is this a trunk link? If so make sure trunking is configured on the switch side and the proper encapsualtion and vlans are set correctly on the sub-interfaces on the router. If possible post configs.

Can you post the output of your "show int fa 0/1" for me? By looking at that we probably determine the problem. Be sure you have issued the "no shutdown" command on the interface for the router (make sure that the interface on the device it is connected to isn't administratively down either). Also be sure that the cable is good.

If that port was administratively down he wouldnt get an interface up for that interface. As I stated check the switchport to see if that is admin down, check speed/duplex settings (auto negotiate by default and really no need to hardcode this these days)

Yeah I didn't read thoroughly enough.

At any rate the fact the interface is up/down be sure that the cable is completely plugged into the switch. If that is the case that swap cables (be sure you are using a straight through cable if you are connecting to another switch). If that doesn't work try a different port if possible on your switch. Finally if that doesn't work, then I suggest putting up a hard loop plug on your interface just to see if that will bring it up to rule out the router's interface.

              Hi Guitarzen,

Hope u r unable to give ur valuable time? Can U tell me in what way I can test the ethernet port of my router or any SW for the same?

              All the best
