  • vlan and softphones

    Hi guys here's my question:

I've a switch with 2 separated vlan configured: vlan data and vlan voice.

Is it possible to configure a pc with a softphone client so that when i use the softphone all the voip traffic is forwarded to vlan voice and when i do web browsing all the normal traffic is forwarded to vlan data???

    Thx in advance!

    Re: vlan and softphones

you would need to have two network interfaces on the specific computer.
each switchport can (usually, if i remember correctly) only belong to one vlan at a time.

so your software would need to know to route all softphone traffic out nic0, and all other traffic out nic1. THis could potentially be acheived with a static route...

You'd think so but voip changes that with the what they call auxiliary vlan or mini-trunk.

You can't do this with a softphone.

Sorry this is but all the switches I've worked with that support VLANs can assign a port to multiple VLANs at one time and there are plenty of NICs that support VLAN tagging.

But as far as the softphone goes I really don't know since I've never worked with one. Garen I'm sure is correct.
