  • Trouble Loading IOS on a Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch

    Hello.

Issue at hand is while base-lining a switch for storage the IOS was deleted. Now I am unable to get the switch to boot into ROMMON mode to load a new IOS onto it.

When the switch boots it comes up with the prompt
    Switch:

at first glance someone would say that the start-up configuration was just deleted and the switch is working fine. however the only options I currently have under this prompt are as follows

    switch: ?
? -- Present list of available commands
boot -- Load and boot an executable image
    cat -- Concatenate (type) file(s)
    copy -- Copy a file
    delete -- Delete file(s)
dir -- List files in directories
    flash_init -- Initialize flash filesystem(s)
    format -- Format a filesystem
    fsck -- Check filesystem consistency
help -- Present list of available commands
load_helper -- Load and initialize a helper image
memory -- Present memory heap utilization information
    mkdir -- Create dir(s)
    more -- Concatenate (display) file(s)
    rename -- Rename a file
    reset -- Reset the system
    rmdir -- Delete empty dir(s)
set -- Set or display environment variables
set_param -- Set system parameters in flash
trap -- Cause a software breakpoint to occur
    type -- Concatenate (type) file(s)
unset -- Unset one or more environment variables
version -- Display boot loader version
    switch:

any and all help in solving this problem will be much appreciated.

oh yes and on a side note- even though it was getting base-lined for storage, a recent electrical surge @ one of the buildings we're supporting has caused us to need the switch again >< Gotta love the Iraqi weather

If you have a copy of the IOS then you can XModem it across to the switch

I've never used XModem before, downloaded a trial copy and it doesn't seem to be working. When attempting to send the fail it says the Serial port is open but the connection times out.

It's been awhile since I've done this so I could be wrong, but do you have XModem set to 9600/8-N-1?

Can anyone think of a reason why it's not coming up in a rommon prompt? I've done everything i know to get it to load into rommon, CTRL + Break during startup, pressing the MODE button while it's starting up, and power cycling it 4-8 times; none of these worked.

I'm having this issue with a 3750 Switch aswell. It's from my last deployment and noone knows the password currently on it. I was going to go in and reset the password so I could edit the config. Today just doesn't seem to be my day.

Well to me it looks like you are in the ROMMON mode, but than on a switch....
