    Did some reading but no books could explain to me clearly how the Local Management Interface makes the Data Link Connection identifiers globally significant. From what i understand LMI just updates as to the status of the virtual circuit between the router and the nearest frame relay switch and not the remote router. The DLCI by using numbers, identify the circuit between the the router and the nearest frame relay switch and not the remote router as well.

    So how does LMI make DLCI globally significant?. Help please.

    LMI is a set of enhancements to the basic FR specifications. The only common extension is the Virtual Circuit status messages from the FR switch as you have stated below. There are also optional extensions like Global addressing, Multicast addressing and Flow Control.

    With LMI global addressing you could say that Frame Relay works like a LAN. Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) and Reverse ARP functions like in a LAN environment mapping Layer 3 to Layer 2.
