  • Cisco ADSL WIC

    Dear All,
I have installed a Cisco ADSL WIC in my Cisco 1841 Router.
I Have the following data from my ISP:
    - Username : user
    - Password : pass
    - Protocol : PPoE LLC
    - VPI : 50
    - VCI : 0

How Can I Configure My Router to replace the ADSL Modem I recieved from my ISP using the above configuration?

    Thanks alot

    Re: Cisco ADSL WIC

The following config is adapted from a PPPoA 837 config but should work... The blue text are variables and should be set accordingly. I've made the assumption you are using CHAP authentication.

The first section configures the physical interface:

    interface ATM0
    no ip address
ip mtu 1452 !The MTU and MSS settings of this config were put in place to deal with certain unique issues.
    ip tcp adjust-mss 1300
    no atm ilmi-keepalive
    dsl operating-mode auto

The next section creates a point-to-point subinterface on the physical interface and configures it to be part of a dialer pool (useful if you might want to configure multiple physical ADSL connections as a single logical entity):

    interface ATM0.1 point-to-point
    ip mtu 1452
    pvc 0/50
encapsulation aal5snap ppp dialer !aal5snap is PPPoE, aal5mux is PPPoA
    dialer pool-member 1

Finally the logical dialer interface is created and configured to use the dialer pool containing the subinterface created in the last section:

    interface Dialer0
ip address negotiated !Most ISP's use DHCP even with static addresses
    no ip redirects
    no ip unreachables
    ip mtu 1452
    encapsulation ppp
    ip tcp adjust-mss 1300
    no ip mroute-cache
    dialer pool 1
    dialer-group 1
    no cdp enable
    ppp authentication chap callin
    ppp chap hostname user
    ppp chap password 0 pass

As I said, this was adapted from the config for an 837 using IOS 12.3 but hopefully this will give you some direction....

      Re: Cisco ADSL WIC

All what I need now is to have my Dialer0 get an IP from my ISP, I have this output from the "Show IP Interface Brief"

      BusinessOne#sh ip int brief
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Protocol
      FastEthernet0/0 YES NVRAM up up
FastEthernet0/1 unassigned YES NVRAM administratively down down
Serial0/0/0 unassigned YES NVRAM administratively down down
ATM0/1/0 unassigned YES NVRAM up up
ATM0/1/0.1 unassigned YES unset up up
NVI0 unassigned YES unset up up
Virtual-Access1 unassigned YES unset up up
Virtual-Access2 unassigned YES unset down down
Dialer0 unassigned YES manual up up

WHAT Should I do? somebody asked me to set the IPCP setting, but I do not know how to do, Please HELP

      Thanx alot

        Re: Cisco ADSL WIC

        Hi again mmajai,

The default settings should allow IPCP (part of the PPP protocol that deals with IP address assignment) to receive an address if one is offered. Try configuring the Dialer0 interface with static address information instead.
