  • Monitoring BW usage in real time

    Hi,

I have a Cisco 871. How can I monitor who is using the internet in a given time?

I know I can install a netflow monitor, but that will only generate me graphs for daily, monthly, hourly usage.

I need something like the linux iftop utility: http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pdw/iftop/iftop_normal.png

Sometimes internet connection is really slow, and I have to figure out who is using it. I'd like to check who is using the net when I'm experiencing slowdowns.

There are several tools to do this, this is one that is free from Solarwinds

PRTG can give you a real time analysis. You'll need to install it and create a packet sniffer sensor and then set up a port monitor on your switch and monitor the port your router is connected to.

Do you want to know usage by username? That would have to integrate into Active Directory somehow (or whatever SSO service you use) and would, to my knowledge, require some kind of user agent on the machines in question. At one of the places I work at we have an 8e6 system that monitors things like that, but each computer has to have a client application installed and running in the background for a username to be traced to it. That's probably much more involved and expensive than what you're wanting, but I just thought I'd toss my two cents in.

I don't need user names just ip address.

This is what I need: http://mcdouglas.dyndns.org/2009-02-12_1530.swf
          (linux iftop utility)

I did try ip accounting, unfortunately it only logs egress traffic. I have to monitor my upload bw, so that would be egress on my public interface. I only received my public ip address as source IP. I need to know which local ip address is uploading.
