  • How to upgrade IOS on Cisco 2620XM w/Partitioned Flash

    Hello all.

I recently bought a Cisco 2620XM router from ciscokits.com. It is supposed to support IPv6 but it did not come loaded with the correct IOS image to do so. I tried loading the correct IOS that came on a cd with the router via FTP and was returned a "not enough space on device" error.

When I did a show flash I was given the following output:

    System flash directory, partition 1:
    File Length Name/status
    1 13596436 c2600-ipbasek9-mz.124-17a.bin
    [13596500 bytes used, 3180712 available, 16777212 total]
16384K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

    System flash directory, partition 2:
    File Length Name/status
    1 9283676 c2600-ipbase-mz.123-6e.bin
    [9283740 bytes used, 24270688 available, 33554428 total]
32768K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

The first partition is not big enough for the 27mb IOS image I want to upgrade the router to (the router according to ciscokits.com is supposed to support the 27mb IOS file).

I tried using the command "copy ftp flash:2" but it said that flash:2 was a invalid command, however if I do a "show flash:2" that does work.

I used a show version to check and see which IOS the router is using, which is the IOS in flash:1

Does anyone know how I would going about uploading and using the 27MB IOS on the router?

    -Thanks in advance

Re: How to upgrade IOS on Cisco 2620XM w/Partitioned Flash

I am following the guide but it is not working.

I set the config register to 0x2101 like it says, save the config, then reload but the router keeps booting into the IOS. It will not boot into rommon/boot mode.

      What is going wrong?

Here is the show ver output after I boot the router using the 0x2101 config register setting:

Yes, I just edited my post before I saw yours.

Look at my post again, it has the show version output and it is booting using 0x2101.

If I go with a 0x2100 and go into rommon mode will the commands in that guide still work?

          UPDATE:

I think when set to 0x2101 it was booting from the second partition. I followed the guide even though I was not in boot mode and it worked.

          Thank you.

I did some googling, and found out that people partition flash to gold two IOS images at once.

I found plenty of guides on how to partition flash, but none on how to choose what partition to boot from.

Do you know how to do that by any chance?
