  • Assign Ip Port

IM SO LOST, CAN SOME ONE HELP ME ON TWO BASIC QUESTION...

    QUESTION One.

I have an 1812 cisco router with 8 switch ports,
im trying to configure switch port fastethernet 5
to send and recive data from my PC... EG DATA: TFTP, SSH etc
I have configured the default vlan 1 with an ip address
and was about to assign a static ip address to switch ports fastethernet 5
when the follow message below appears..

% IP addresses may not be configured on L2 links.

could someone write me a configration of how to assign
switch ports fastethernet 5 a static ip address or convert it to a L3 Link..

    Question Two:

while i could not configure a static ip address to switch ports fastethernet 5
i desided to confugure DHCP for the switch ports, which i did from the
following running-confuration.. My question is how do i apply these configrations
    to the router's switch ports.

    Router1#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
    Router1(config)#ip dhcp pool Address_server
    Router1(dhcp-config)#host 172.25.1.34 255.255.255.0
    Router1(dhcp-config)#client-name bigX
    Router1(dhcp-config)#default-router 172.25.1.1
    Router1(dhcp-config)#domain-name Happz.com
    Router1(dhcp-config)#dns-server 172.25.1.1
    Router1(dhcp-config)#lease 2
    Router1(dhcp-config)#exit

    Re: Assign Ip Port

As the error message states... you cannot assign an ip address (layer 3) to ports f2-f9. Ports f2-f9 are layer 2 only on an 1800 series (at least they are on my 1811). On my 1811, ports f0 and f1 are layer 3. Based on cisco.com, the 1812 has 2 ISDN (BRI) interfaces and 8 layer 2 interfaces.

You should be able to enable inter-vlan routing and achieve the same thing...

    1) create vlan 2
    Code:
    (config)#vlan 2
    (config-vlan)#name vlan2
    2) create a vlan 2 interface and assign an IP address
    Code:
    (config)#interface vlan2
    (config-if)#ip address 172.25.1.1 255.255.255.0
    (config-if)#no shut
    3) assign switchport f5 to vlan2
    Code:
    (config)#interface f5
    (config-if)#switchport access vlan 2
    4) create your DHCP scope to match the ip address range you created for vlan 2. set vlan 2 ip address as the default-router in the scope

Now any PC you connect to switchports f5 (or any switch port you assign to vlan 2) will get an ip address assigned from the pool and be routed.
