  • File transfering in Switched Network

I have a network in my office using Cisco 2950 and 3750 switches. The office network is connected to our main office and the there located the gateway. Every PC is configured using the gateway IP. At present when a file is copied from one PC to other, all the contents directly goes to gateway. As my knowledge, when data transmitted in a network having switch, the actual method is first packet is transmitted to gateway and after identifying the MAC of the switch ports, rest of the data passes directly through the ports without the help of the gateway. Is there anything to add in the switch configuration for that ? Kindly help me.......

Why are you so sure that everything is passing the gateway?
The only reason what might be is that you are copying across vlans.

A PC sends only his traffic to his gateway if he cannot find the network you are trying to reach.
And that is only when you are trying to connect to a pc/server which is outside it's own subnet.

bcoz, that file copying affects the performance of the web based applications, we r using in our office.

one more doubt is there.... what will be the effect of file transfer, when i block the route to the gateway from the 3750-the main switch in the core. Is the copy process will terminate..... I want a solution for accessing the web applications without bandwith issues, while i transfer local files in the network....

and i want to know that, what is the best configuration, i can use in the network for my office LAN. We have almost 250 numbers of nodes in the network and around 150 numbers are working simultaniously. Here is no LAN administrator. I have to set up the LAN. We have 6MB bandwidth allotted to our office for connectivity. DHCP is there at headoffice. How can I configure the LAN perfectly.

Well first of all you should post a lot more info.
From where to where are you copying?
How does your network looks like (drawing please)?
        etcetc.
