  • Not receiving email message from SNMP Trap

I have WhatsUp Gold v.11 setup on my home network that is monitoring my network devices such as my Cisco Router, and Cisco Switches.

I setup a SNMP trap link down state to have it sent to my hotmail email address, but I didnít received it. I know it tried to go out because when I unplugged one of my computers, my firewall ask me do I want to allow SNMP to send an email massage. I hit allow, but did not receive the message.

I think I didnít setup my SMTP setup correctly in WhatsUp Gold.

The following is the my Email Action Setup Window were it ask me to input my information:

    Mail Destination:

    NAME: Test SNMP Trap Message

    DESCRIPTION: E-mail Action

    SMTP Server: smtp.email.msn.com

    PORT: 25

    MAIL TO: [email protected]

Can someone tell me if Iím entering the Information correctly?

Re: Not receiving email message from SNMP Trap

    Hi tsignla32

Are you sure using the Hotmail SMTP server is correct?

If I wanted to send a mail from a PC which was monitoring my home lab equipment to my hotmail account, I would use MY ISP's mail server as the the place for the mail to be sent and this should then forward it on to your hotmail account.

Mails from your home should go to and be initailly processed by your ISP's mail server.

    Just a thought.

    Best Regards,

    Michael

Re: Not receiving email message from SNMP Trap

      Michael,

Thanks - For the prompt response. I think me problem is I'm entering the SMTP Server information incorrectly. If I intepret your resonse correctly I will edit my Email Action as followings:

      Mail Destination:

      NAME: Test SNMP Trap Message

      DESCRIPTION: E-mail Action

      SMTP Server: hotmail.com

      PORT: 25

MAIL TO: hotmail.com (I will try this to my actual email address if I do not receive the email)

I will give this a try when I get home from work.

      Thanks

Re: Not receiving email message from SNMP Trap

        Hi tsignal32

No, I think you misunderstood what I am getting at. Who is your Internet Service Provider (ISP) at home?

I live in Ireland and my ISP is Eircom. So if I was running Whatsupgold at home against my own home lab I would have the following

        Mail Destination:

        NAME: Test SNMP Trap Message

        DESCRIPTION: E-mail Action

        SMTP Server: mailserver.eircom.net

        PORT: 25

        MAIL TO: [email protected]

I think this should be the same as if you opened up say Outlook Express on your home PC and sent me an email. Outlook Express would be configured to send the mail to your ISP's mail server and then your ISP's mail server would send the mail on to my email address.

This is how I would configure it anyway.

        HTH

        Best Regards,

        Michael

          Michael,

I have COX Cable as my ISP, so would the following work?

          Mail Destination:

          NAME: Test SNMP Trap Message

          DESCRIPTION: E-mail Action

          SMTP Server: mailserver.cox.net

          PORT: 25

          MAIL TO: [email protected]

          Thanks

            Hi tsignal32

I am not saying that it will work, but this is the way I would configure it and the way I would expect it to work.

Try it out and let me know how you get on.

Re: Not receiving email message from SNMP Trap

                Michael,

I finally got the SNMP email trap message to work. Apparenty, I did not have the correct name for the mail server for COX. I did a Google search, and found it.

                Mail Destination:

                NAME: Test SNMP Trap Message

                DESCRIPTION: E-mail Action

                SMTP Server: smtp.west.cox.net

                PORT: 25

                MAIL TO: [email protected]

Below is the URL that maybe helpful for someone:

                Thanks

                  Hi tsignal32

Glad to see you got it sorted. I had a feeling that once you switched mail servers from the hotmail server to your ISP's mail server that you would have success.
