  • Password recovery method for Cisco 3560 switch

David already explained how to reset password of Cisco router's & switches. He also added Cisco direct link. Last week I was in trouble as I did not remember password for Cisco 3560 24PT Layer III switch . Here is a simple process through which we can recover password for Cisco catalyst 3560 L III switch

    - attach switch to PC via console cable
    - Open "Hyper Terminal" ( Assuming you are running Windows OS )
    - Reset "Port settings" to "Restore Defaults"
    - Power on your switch
    - Hold the green button which is at front panel of 3560 switch

    - You'll be at following screen :

    List of filesystems currently registered:

    flash[0]: (read-write)
    xmodem[1]: (read-only)
    null[2]: (read-write)
    bs[3]: (read-only)
at CLI you'll see "switch:" these letters only.

    - Type "switch:dir flash/"
    - It shows contains in it as follws :
    Directory of flash:/

    2 -rwx 616 <date> vlan.dat
    3 -rwx 5 <date> private-config.text
    5 drwx 192 <date> c3560-ipbase-mz.122-25.SEB4
    358 -rwx 1615 <date>
-rename the flash file by giving following command :
    switch: rename <old_name> <new_name>

reboot switch by saying "switch:boot" .

While initializing switch asks Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]: n

    Say "No" at this.

    And that's it.
    - Now say "enable" and you'll not be prompted for password.

Note: this method works only if password recovery mechanism is enabled on your switch.

How to check if your switch is password recovery mechanism enabled ?
Answer : At boot prompt it shows it in 1st stage.

[ I used the same method I mentioned above. Dont do this in hurry. Read whatever apears on screen then only proceed. ]
