  • 1924 / 2950 Switch VLAN Configuration

    Hi

I have set up a small network at home which includes a couple of 2522 routers a 2950t and a 1924 Switch, I would like to configure the Switches to communicate using VLAN's and trunking.

I have configured the 2950 with the VLAN information using the Switchport command and connected a cable to fa 0/17 from the 1924 fa 0/26 port which will be used as the trunk link

When I configure them I cannot get them to use the same trunking protocol, is this possible? as the 2950 is using 802.1q, the 1924 is using ISL so they are not communicating. I have tried the Switchport trunk encapsulation command on the 2950 but this appears to be unsupported

Has anyone any ideas how I can configure them to communicate the VLAN info, the 1924 is a VTP client the 2950 is a VTP Server. All help much appreciated

    Thanks in advance

I think you haven't compatible switches.

    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/50.shtml
ISL (Cisco proprietary protocol, and not supported by the 2940 or 2950 series switches)

The Catalyst 1900 runs two versions of images, namely the Standard and Enterprise editions. Trunking is only supported on the Enterprise images, and it only supports ISL encapsulation and does not support 802.1q

Thanks for the reply, I had a feeling this was the case, is there no way of connecting the two, the 1924 is using Enterprise edition software

You'd have to run a seperate connection for each vlan. The switches support mutually exclusive trunking protocols.
