  • Terminal Services Performance issues

    Hi,

I'm having Terminal Services performance issues.

The current setup is as follows.
    A very large Domain.
Nine 2008 SP2 servers running Terminal Services on IBM HS21 Blades.
A licensing server with 1600 licenses.
    A Broker Services server.
There is an Application that is published on these servers.
There are also various file servers and a DS4800 SAN running.
Client machines are all Intel i5 with Win7 pro.

There are only 623 users at the moment, perhaps 260 concurrent connections, no more than 270.

The issue is that last week, some users started experiencing very slow performance. There can be two PC's right nexted to each other and one will be slow and the other not. In fact I can run the application from a machine and it will be fine, close the app and run it again a few seconds later and it will bevery slow. The initial logon is slow. Going through the menus is not too bad but get to a routine and it takes =/- 60 seconds to open a page.

Then log out and in again and you may get a fast session, where response is instant.
The network guys claim there is nothing wrong on their side. I have checked performance monitor on all the servers and they are all around 8 to 15% CPU, 30 to 40% RAM usage, Disk page faults 3 per/sec if that.

Is there any mangement software for Terminal Services other than what it comes with. Cause once you have a server farm (Broker Server) it is difficult to see which server a session is using.

I suspect that it maybe a server that is not performing properly and if the Broker connects you to it then you have a slow session. I really need some software that can tell me where a client is connected to so I can isolate the fault.

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Re: Terminal Services Performance issues

There is known issue with the hardware of H21 blades... mostly due hard disk/raid issues...

      Re: Terminal Services Performance issues

      Hi Yuval,

Thanks for the response. Are you saying theirs an issue with disk IO's on the HS21's or the actual RAID. I am running RAID1 on all 45 HS21's, including the TS servers. I did do a firmware update on all 45 Blades before the system went live. That was about 8 months ago.
      I'll try investigating this.
In terms of the actual TS setup, all the MS best practices were followed and an independant MS approved company audited the setup once it was complete.
There really doesn't seem to be very much in terms of trouble shooting ability once you have a Broker Services server running or proper Management software to assist you. It's as if MS just expect it never to give issues. This was my biggest concern when implementing a Broker Server.

      Kind Regards

Try to use the performance monitor to find the problems. Disk latency can be an issue.

          Hi,

We had customer with the same issue. I guess that you are using SATA drives (build in).
The customer replace all this servers....
