  • How to move TS from old domain to new domain user profiles

    Hi

    TS server: Windows2008 SP2
    New DC: Windows 2008 R2 (DOMAIN X)
Old DC: Windows SBS 2003 (DOMAIN Y)

Recently we moved to a new domain X. The old domain Y is still up. Our terminal server is still running on the old domain Y. Now I need to move the TS server to the new domain so I can shutdown the old domain. The user profiles are stored locally on the TS. The profile path was not setup in AD on the old DC.

When adding the TS to the new domain will it create new user folders? Meaning I need to setup the user specific settings user per user again. Is this correct?

If yes is there a better way to move the TS to the new domain without having to reconfigure all users (mainly printer settings will need to be configured per user which is a big pain in the ass)?

    Rgds

The profile is connect to the user SID. If you change the user SID, they a new profile will be created. You can use USMT 4.0 to migrate the users profiles for example:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...01(WS.10).aspx

If you plan to use ADMT 3.2, you can migrate the old SID so the profile should work after the server migration. However, its recommanded to check this step in a lab before move to prod.

      Thanks for the reply.

it's about 70 profiles. Copying the profiles over via system properties - advanced - user profiles - would be an option as well then I guess. Spending 2 hours copying the profiles over will be faster then reconfiguring everything manually.

Copying the profiles can only succeed if the destination profile already exists and the os does not change. The most reliable was is to use the user state migration tool as mentioned yuval14.

Ok, will pull the terminal server to a virtual disk and try to test.
