  • No Terminal Server printing in Outlook and Acrobat

I have 30 users that log into Terminal Server 2003 a various times. They are remote field workers in social servics. Two of the computers cannot print to their terminal server printer when they are in Outlook or Acrobat Reader.

When they log into the terminal server, ther HP Laserjet 5L shows up in the session. They can print a test page and they can print from Microsoft Word or Internet Explorer.

If they open an e-mail in Outlook 2007 and try to print it they get a message that no printers are installed. The same with Acrobat Reader. If they open a PDF and try to print it, Acrobat says there are no printers installed. If you exit out of Outlook or Acrobat the session printer is there and you can print to it.

I tried reinstalling the printer locally. The second computer having this problem is at another location and it involves a Brother printer. I have checked the drivers installed in 'server properties' on the terminal server and it looks like all the right universal drivers are installed. There are at least 28 other people using the same TS that do not have this problem. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Please verify that the clients are using the same printer driver as the 28 computers.
Also, if this doesnt work, did you tried to delete the user profile on the TS?

The drivers are installed on the computers, not the clients profiles. Although these are different locations, I can log ito the TS using my test account and replicate the problem. The profiles are all newly constructed. I put in a new SBS 2008 server and left the exiting TS 2003. All the profiles were built from scratch two weeks aga. Thanks.

Some of the printer settings reside in the local TS profile. Please delete the profile and try again.

It's a roaming profile ceated on SBS 2008 R2 with a mailbox. Would I not have to delete the account in order to delete the profile? What if I delete the temporary profile on the Server 2003 Terminal Server? Thanks.

Re: No Terminal Server printing in Outlook and Acrobat

To delete the user profile you can:

            1. Backup the profile (e.g. export IE fav. etc.).
            2. Log off the user.
            3. Delete the profile by using Control Panel -> System.

bdw.. Did you tried to print with the same user, but from other computer?

Re: No Terminal Server printing in Outlook and Acrobat

I am going to be on-site tomorrow to do this. Am I going to backup up the profile on the SBS 2008 server and then delete this as well as the profile created on the TS?

Please check if the TS is using the raoming profile or local profile. In case that it using a local profile, please dont delete the roaming profile...

Re: No Terminal Server printing in Outlook and Acrobat

I was onsite today. I also installed a second local printer, an HP 2035. I made sure universal print drivers were installed. I am not able to print Outlook E-mail of PDF files regardless of who is logged onto the terminal server. I can print anything else including Word documents, test pages and web pages. Thanks.

Re: No Terminal Server printing in Outlook and Acrobat

As what I understood - the issue now is with the acrobat software.
Did you use an acrobat software for TS? Did you setup it as the recommended
                    Settings for TS?

Re: No Terminal Server printing in Outlook and Acrobat

I am getting closer to the solution. I discovered that in a Terminal Server session, the problem user could not select or change a default printer. The TS users in question have a key missing in their registry. They should have:

                      HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\W indows

They are all missing the "Windows" key and only have:

                      HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion

The 'Windows' key is where the printers are enumerated. I exported the correct key to a .reg file and placed it on the desktop of all the TS users. I logged on as some of the users who could not print from Acrobat, Outlook and Excel. I double-click the .reg and installed it. After logging off and back on, I was then able to select printers from a drop-down when before all I got was a message that no printers were installed.

This TS is on a brand new installation of SBS 2008 using roaming profiles. I suspect the default profile on the SBS server is corrupted and I would like to patch it. Where would I find the 'default profile'?

                      Thanks for all the help.

Re: No Terminal Server printing in Outlook and Acrobat

                        Hi,

You can use the following article: "Profile Changes in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 and beyond":

                        http://blog.stealthpuppy.com/windows...nghorn-server/

However, if you are uisng the DC as TS server, you should be updated that this isnt recommanded by MS nor by security staff.
                        Best Regards,

It likely didn't stand out clearly in my earlier posts but I put in a new SBS 2008 server and kept the existing SBS 2003 TS with is a domain member. Thanks.
