  • Terminal Server 2000 and 2003

I have a Windows 2000 Terminal server setup with about 12 TS servers running Windows 2000 With Citrix 4.0. We are moving to Server 2003 and I have installed a test machine to see how this will work.

My question is will the Windows 2003 server use the same licesing as the Windows 2000 servers or will I have to do some type of upgrade?

I'm new to Terminal services so I'm not sure what to look for on this one. We are testing Server 2003 now and Will also be installing 2008 for a futrue Citrix Farm but for now we are going to Server 2003.

Adding 2003 Servers to a 2000 Terminal Enviroment is it easy to do and what is needed to do this?

    Any advice would be great.

    Hi,

    You will need to:

    1. Buy TS 2008 R2 CAL Remote Desktop licenses
    2. Install Win 2003 (or 2008 R2) for TS license server.
    3. Activiate the license server + the TS CALs.
    4. Point the new TS servers to the new TS license server.

    * I guess that you will need to move to Win 2008 R2 now Win 2003 is old and Microsoft dont sell it anymore. You can buy Win 2008 R2 license and install Win 2003, but there is no good reason for this today.

      Thank for the reply

As of now we will be using Server 2003 for the next 2 quaters then we will go to 2008. If we use server 2003 do we still have to upgrade the License server? I know Server 2003 is old but my boss wants it this way so please advise on this. I will move to 2008 in 6 months so I have to make this work for now.

      Thanks again for your help.

You do need a Windows 2008 license server for 2008 terminal services.

Acording to MS "If we use server 2003 do we still have to upgrade the License server?" , the the most common support matrix:

If Win 2000 TS -then the TS server can use: Win 2000 TS License Server, Win 2003/R2 TS License Server, Win 2008 TS License Server, Win 2008 R2 TS License Server

If Win 2003 TS -then the TS server can use: Win 2003/R2 TS License Server, Win 2008 TS License Server, Win 2008 R2 TS License Server

If Win 2008 TS -then the TS server can use: Win 2008 TS License Server, Win 2008 R2 TS License Server

If Win 2008 R2 TS -then the TS server can use: Win 2008 R2 TS License Server

Nice thanks a bunch. We are not useing Windows 2003 R2 just standerd edition. Will that be an issue?

              Win 2003/R2 = Win 2003 or Win 2003 R2.
