  • Remote Desktop Client Freezing / Disconnecting

I have a network of 15 users all running XP Pro Sp3. Server is a 2003 SBS running exchange 2k3. The firewall is a sonicwall TZ210 I have Kaspersky AV On all workstations and servers.

The users all use RDP Client to connect to a offsite server. Users are at random experiencing disconnects and their session freezing for about 5 to 10 secs then reconnects.

I have checked all the logs including the one on the firewall and found nothing that shows dropped packets, or blocked sessions. I can connect to this customer that is having this issue remotely and my connection never drops even when they experience these issues with the RDP Client. I have ran tracert to the offsite box and that seems to be ok. I am all out of options. Any suggestions on how to find out what is causing the issue.

    Update:

I have research the web and read that i should enable KeepAlives. I have confirmed from 3 users that when they leave their computer for about 10 min they get disconnected. The other side to this is that if i connect to this server from my home it does not get disconnected on idle for over 30 min. I checked the group policys to see if something is causing this and see no such policy.

Please update the RDP client to the latest RDC version (7.1).
If this issue occur again, then try to disable the Kaspersky AV + upgrade the Sonicwall OS
to the latest OS version. Then use debug mode to check the connection to the remote TS.

Re: Remote Desktop Client Freezing / Disconnecting

I narrowed this down to be on the pc side. If i connect to the cloud server from one of the servers at the problematic location i dont get timed out. The server uses an older version of RDP Client. I copied the RDP CLient files from the server to the workstation and same thing. I did update the sonicwall to the latest firmare. I dont think its the sonicwall cause from the server the connection doesnt lock and disconnect. The timeout is 10 min. The servers also have KAV installed.

This is what im thinking it could be. The problematic location had their own Terminal Server. Which i unistalled that service. Could it be that some setting are still attached to the workstations even thought there are no GPO settings on the workstations. I even shut down the server that had Terminal Services on it and same thing. Im trying to find if there is a registry entry that has to be manually changed.

I am connected to one of the workstations remotely and been doing all the tests this way. I exited out of KAV from running on the workstation and i opened a session waited 10 min and no disconnect. I am testing this again to double check. If this is the av causing this why wouldnt the servers be affected?

Well so far it looks like KAV 6 is the problem. But i had another workstation with Security essentials and they had the same problem at least that is what they told me. I will see why KAV is doing this.
