  • 2008 Server not dishing out licenses

    Hello all,

I have a problem with our 2008 server not dishing out licenses to client machines, I don’t understand a huge amount about licensing and how it works but this is what I want to happen.

We have a number of 2000 advance servers in our domain and one 2008 server which is a dc and running dns, we also have a couple of 2000 servers running ad too. The 2008 server is a Ts license server and has 10 Client access licenses available but the client xp & 2000 machines only seem to pick up a temp license.

Could anyone help me look into why? The 2008 server looks ok in TS License manager.

Just so I understand client machine either being a 2000 or xp or vista etc needs a license to connect to the 2008 Terminal server, this is a license we need to buy? We have bought 10 for the moment called WinRmtDsktpSrvcsCAL SNGL OLP NL UsrCal. These are installed and activated on the 2008 license server.

    Thanks for all your help!

        Hi all,

After another reboot of the server I now have another error message saying the below.

I think I may need to remove the TS role and then re add it, what are the complications of doing this? I only have 10 cals on the server but none are in use.

        Thanks,
        Kind Regards,
        Simon

I have installed the above hotfix and I am getting more error messages as posted above, there was one message about the TS Computers Group Missing.

          Any help would be great!

          Thanks

              Thanks for your reply!

Over the weekend I have removed the TS License role and re added it and added the licenses again. I am not getting any errors at all but the license count doesn't seem to be going down when I connect a new pc to the terminal server.

              Anyone got any ideas?

              Thanks

Its may take a few weeks for the client to obtain the new license. The current use is temp. license I guess.

                  Ok thanks!

I am getting an error now when a new user tries to connec to the ts server.

The errror is "the connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login"

I have had a look in ad and the box isnt ticked for deny logon for ts. And remote user is ticked and allowed

                  Any ideas?

                  Many thanks,
                  Simon

                    Hi again,

Got over the above but now have this error once connected to the ts server. The user is a member of the remote desktop group.

                    Regards,

Is allow logon via TS is enabled for Remote Desktop group? Is the TS is also DC?!

                        Hi,

I think its enabled in remote desktop group, where can I check?

The TS server is a dc yeah.

                        Thanks for your help.

Please use a dedicated server for TS (Not DC, Exchange etc.)

                            Really?

But had issues with the ts licenseing as it's the only 2008 server we have on our lan so had to become a dc to work ok?

                            Regards,
                            Simon

Microsoft doesnt recommanded to use DC for TS. Also, TS server require good perfomance. Combine it with DC can create a lots of security and perfomance issues.
