  • 2008 TS License Help

    Hi all,

I have just setup a new 2008 TS box which after following guides on I have implemented in to our windows 2000 Forest.

I have updated the scheme and followed all the instructions on the list and it completed successfully however when I try to add the 2008 ts server to the license servers group it fails with the following error. "Terminal Server License Servers group in the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) because the license server is unable to contact AD DS." I have tried to look around on line but can only see that it relates to the scheme needing updating but it said it had completed ok.

    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks, Simon

          Hi,

Thanks for the reply but the 2008 server is now a Domain controller so the local user is no longer available, sorry didn't mention it above...

          Thanks,
          Simon

Are you sure you have installed this as domain admin....?

"....The administrator performing the installation must have Domain Admin rights because part of the installation now involves adding the license server computer account to the Terminal Server License Servers security group..."

I think that might be the problem. See this excerpt from the technet blog:

Upon installing a Windows 2008 TSL, you may find the following event in the System event log:
                    Event ID: 8195
                    Task Category: None
                    Level: Warning
                    Keywords: Classic
                    User: N/A
                    Computer: tsl.alpineskihouse.com
                    Description:
The computer account for the Terminal Services license server could not be added to the Terminal Server License Servers group in Active Directory Domain Services during the installation of TS Licensing. The action failed with Win32 error code 0x80072037.

This event occurs in the following situations:
                    1. You have a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain with either all the
domain controllers are Windows 2000, or at least the PDC Emulator is still running
on a Windows 2000 domain controller. When this is the case, the "Terminal Server
License Severs" group does not exist in the "Built-in" container. Look for the
existence of this group. If it does not exist, you need to move the PDC Emulator
role over to a Windows Server 2003 domain controller (or higher) and keep it
                      there.
                    2. The "Terminal Server License Servers" group does exist in the "Built-in"
container, but when the License Server installation happens it connected to a
Windows 2000 domain controller. During the installation and running of the license
server it must only connect / communicate with a Windows Server 2003 (or higher)
domain controller for it to function properly.

                      Hi,

Thanks very much for your help!

We only have the 1 2008 server and the rest are all 2000 advance servers. So If I move the pdc role to the 2008 box do you think it will work?

                      Cheers,
                      Si

                        Re: 2008 TS License Help

It can work allright. You need to ADprep your forest to 2003/2008 and move the licensing server to the 2008 server (which allready is a DC)

Remember that the old cals will not work with 2008 TS !
Also remember that is's not good practice to run a TS on a DC, from a security point of view !

Quick one though, why can't you install ts on a 2008 unless it's a dc?

                              You're welcome !
Well it would have worked if you had a 2008 dc in the network and the TS would have been a second 2008 (member) server. So it's not neccesary to run a DC as TS.
Then the license server would prolly have run on your 2008 DC and your new TS wouldn't have to be a DC. From security point of view it's not a good thing to grand ppl access to your DC, even if it is on the TS part of the server.
I have a 2008 TS running in a 2003 native domain here where my 2003 server is the DC and the 2008 is a member and this is running for about a year now without any problems.
