  • IE8 on 2003 Terminal Server, Crashing & Slow???

    Hi All

This is my first post here, so first of all "HELLO!!!"

I have a 2003 terminal server, 2003 SBS server and a 2003 BDC, the 2003 terminal server has 30 users, around 15 of these where using outlook on the server (not good i know) so I have moved to using OWA instead but this is where it has all gone wrong!

the TS server has IE8 installed on it (updated as normal) but it just seems to be soo unstable with OWA running, it will freeze for 30 sec's at a time when clicking on options or opening new mail. It is also crashing on sending new mail,

Another thing to note is that im sure that IE8 is using more memory that outlook was! (150mb+ per user according to Process Explorer)

Anyone got any ideas on a possible fix?

    Thanks

A couple of questions and comments:

    1. Why is it that you think running Outlook on a TS is bad? It's 100% supported by Microsoft.

    2. IE8 stinks.

    3. I don't even try to support IE in my TS farm. We tell our users to browse the web from their local machines. If they run IE in their TS session and have problems, we tell them to close IE and re-open it.

    4. Browsing in a TS session is a losing battle. It's a huge performance hit due to so many web sites using dynamic content, IE being too flaky, security risks due to ActiveX, Java, malware, malicious web sites and code, etc., etc.

    5. Have you tried it with IE7?

Im not sure why I have it in my head that outlook is bad, im sure I was told not to do it, almost felt a bit naughty when I did!

my problem with outlook was with the memory usage, it seem to use loads of memory, is there anyway to curb its usage?

browsing on the server is not normal but when we do use the web on the server it tends to be firefox.

I had IE7 on it before and moved to IE8 to see if it was any better.... massive mistake should have known better...

so I guess the next question is how best to optimise outlook? we have 2003 installed on the server at the moment,

      Cheers

You can look at using Windows System Resource Manager if you're running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise or Datacenter Edition. If not, you'll need to look at a third party product.

Also AFAIK, WSRM is included in every edition of Windows Server 2008.

You need to use a different serial key. I'm not sure what the difference is mind, but we have two keys for Office - one for installation on workstations and one that says "Use this key for installing and using Office suites within a Terminal Services environment."

I will need to go back through our licensing paperwork but I do not recall seeing a TS key... im sure all of our office disks are just retail...

Will have to look into this and maby speak to our suppliers...

Will have a look at this management utility as well

            Thanks

Ok. Our Office is on a VL. As I say, I don't know what the difference is.

Edit: Have a read of this - not sure if this is the only difference though. Best bet would be to speak to Microsoft.

I did run the S/Mime update on the server but i cannot run it on each user session because of user permissions,

i do love terminal service's at times.....
