  • TS Server 2008 in Server 2000 domain

(I hope I have this in the correct place, this may be more server 2008 relat6ed than TS)

I am having an error in the licensing of TS clients on server 2008
    the error is as follows:

The computer account for the license server xxx or the network service account cannot be added to the Terminal Services License Group in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) because the license server is unable to connect to AD DS.

This is followed by error 0x534

The initial environment for this network was a a windows 2000 domain with a single domain controller.
I brought the 2008 server in a member and installed the TS and began receiving these errors. After a bit of research it seems that there was a communication problem between 2008 and 2000 Active Directory so I decided to make the 2008 server a DC.
I ran adprep for the forest, domain and group policy.
    DCPROMO'd the 2008 server
Moved all 5 FSMO roles to the new 2008 server

I still receive the same error when trying to license the server.
I did read an article about putting in a 2003 DC and doing away with the 2000 DC, but the source was obscure at best.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    1. Please move to Win 2008 instead of using Windows 2000. Windows 2000 will be drop from support in the 1.1.2010...

    2. Did you upgrade the schema for Windows 2008 (you should do it even if you dont plan to install Windows 2008 dc..).

    3. Did you install the terminal server license on Windows 2008 computer?

Yes, the plan is to phase out the 2000 DC. as everything is replicating(AD, DNS). I could in theory demote the 2000DC

      2. Did you upgrade the schema for Windows 2008 (you should do it even if you dont plan to install Windows 2008 dc..).

I did run adprep 3 times: first with /forestprep then /domainprep then /gpprep
i was under the impression /forestprep upgraded the schema.

      3. Did you install the terminal server license on Windows 2008 computer?

yes that is where I see the error. when I generate a report it tells me that the server is not a member of the terminal services licensing group. (Which does not exist by the way)

          Thanks for the link.

I created the group manually in AD and added the 2008 server to it. I still receive the same issue. (I also checked that the group replicated to the windows 2000 DC and it did)

Here are some screen shots of the exact errors I receive:

          http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...badco3/ts1.jpg

I also found this link http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...1-bb0bc1654a91 which does not help a lot since I do not have the luxury of installing a windows 2003 DC at this time and have tried the rest of the solutions..

            Hi,

MS KB 911832 provides solution for Windows 2003.
If you are using Windows 2008 SP2 and the issue occured, its recommanded to call the PSS.
I guess that you may get the answer - please upgrade to Windows 2003/2008 domain.

              Thanks for the help yuval14!

It is actually working and for now I can ignore the error.

this article sums it up in 1 line:
Note: A terminal server running Windows Server 2008 can only communicate with a license server running Windows Server 2008

I also went into the license manager and told it not to auto discover license servers and pointed it to itself for licensing.

I then tested and was able to get 5 of my 20 user cals issued.

Re: TS Server 2008 in Server 2000 domain

Thought I would update this thread...

It turns out that there was an FRS replication error preventing the new 2008 domain controller from becoming fully operational, although everything was being replicated except the SYSVOL information.

Once this was cleared, the terminal service errors went away.
This was only discovered while troubleshooting a different issue.

                Thanks for your help yuval14
