  • Server 2008 Licensing Server

Our licensing server is on a 2003 DC. I've installed MS 2008 std and added the Terminal Server role. The License manager complains that it is not compatible with 2003 as they are on different OS's. I therefore need to either upgrade the DC to 2008 or create a 2008 licensing server.

    Questions:

Can I have 2 licensing servers?

Can the 2008 Terminal Server also have the role of License Manager?

Do we have to purchase CALs for connections to the 2008 TS or can we utilise/upgrade some of the existing CALs?

    Thanks for your time

A W2K3 TS license server cannot issue licenses for a W2K8 TS. To answer your questions:

Can I have 2 licensing servers?

I've never heard of anyone doing this but don't see why it wouldn't work

Can the 2008 Terminal Server also have the role of License Manager?

    Yes

Do we have to purchase CALs for connections to the 2008 TS or can we utilise/upgrade some of the existing CALs?

You need to purchase W2K8 TS cal's for users connecting to the W2K8 TS

Also, a W2K8 TS license server can issue licenses for users connecting to W2K and W2K3 TS servers so my suggestion would be to purchase W2K8 TS cal's for your users, and use only the W2K8 TS license server to manage licenses for all of your TS's.
