  • Minimal C:\Windows on a TS Server 2003?

I'm trying to "shrink" our Terminal Server's C: drive so it uses as little disk space as posible (so DR backups over our WAN connection run faster). I am only asking about the Windows directory, I've slimmed down the apps and User profiles already.

I'm just looking for tips/pointers to pare down anything that isn't necessary, but I don't want to cause problems. The Windows directory is 4GB+, I generally leave this stuff alone on our servers so I'm hesitant to start deleting.

These are the larger folders, these use over 2GB so they are what caught my attention. Which can I delete files from? Which should be left alone for the system? Are there any good tech articles on maintaining the contents of these?

    C:\windows\Downloaded Program Files (90MB)
    C:\windows\Driver Cache (112MB)
    C:\windows\Inf (109MB)
    C:\windows\Installer (620MB)
    C:\windows\$hf_mig$ (124MB)
    C:\windows\ServicePackFiles (786MB)
    C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution (100MB)
    C:\windows\system32\dllcache (250MB)
    C:\windows\system32\spool\drivers (325MB)

I have deleted the $NtUinstall*$ folders and removed any print drivers that are not being used.

Please use compression and not delete files/directions that may need to reinstall etc.

You can setup the GPO to delete old temp files etc. and use compression over the WAN.
