  • Can't start Terminal Server Licensing

I had Terminal Server Licensing installed, activated and running on a Server 2003 machine. I have now upgraded the server to a domain server and the Terminal Server Licensing Service won't start:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: TermServLicensing
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 37
    Date: 17/12/2008
    Time: 17:04:17
    User: N/A
    Computer: SERVER1
    Description:
Can't start Terminal Server Licensing because of error 'Could not create the Terminal Server Computers group.
    '.

I have tried everything I can think of (including removing and re-installing Terminal Server Licensing), but cannot get it working again and the error message above doesn't produce much in Google.

Anybody able to give me a pointer?

    Many thanks

    Colin

    Compare:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\TermServLicensing

To another DC with TS License on it.

    Also, please review:

Re: Can't start Terminal Server Licensing

Thanks Yuval - I will take a look.

This is the only TS license server on their network but we have it running also, so will check my registry.

Re: Can't start Terminal Server Licensing

Everything looks the same EXCEPT for

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\TermServLicensing\Parameters\Certificates.000

        and

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\TermServLicensing\Parameters\Certificates.001

On my working server I have binary values for Parm0 etc. but nothing on the problem server.

Re: Can't start Terminal Server Licensing

Please install VM with the same server settings as DC and then install the license server.
Then use ADSIEDIT to compare the security settings and the registration settings of the TS License server in the Active Directory and the registry...

Cracked it - ran DCDiag and found some anomolies in the AD. Repaired and rebooted and all working.

            Thanks for taking an interest.

Glad you got it sorted. Out of interest, what AD problems did you find?

Re: Can't start Terminal Server Licensing

It looked like the permissions hadn't propagated correctly. To be honest I just took a 'blunt weapon' approach ... demoted it rebooted and promoted it and everything started to working.
