  • Possible solution to RDP with Black Screen

Windows 2003 SP2 with RDP enabled for Remote Administration only.

When you RDP in, you get a black screen. You can tab between fields but nothing shows up. Moving the mouse doesn't change anything either. Once you authenticate, you don't have that issue. Even when it times out and you need to re-enter your credentials, it's fine.

I looked at this but this wasn't the solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555840. We had recently applied the MS updates and this was the only server that it happened on. Even when we tried to connect via RDP from XP SP2 or SP3 or another server (2000, 2003, or 2008 )

I did some searching and found this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906510

I checked out the registry and it was set to 000. I imported that key from another server and it works fine now.

No idea what could have caused it. Right now I'm happy I can see the screen again.

    Hope this helps someone else!

ProLiant DL380 G5 Intel Xeon/2.66GHz with embedded HP NC373i Multifunction Gigagbit adapters.

This is one of about 20 models that we have.

In your rdp connection, did you set the experience tab to Lan or higher?

It didn't matter which setting we configured our RDP connections--it was the same result. For some reason the reg key [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Colors] had everything set to "0 0 0", so no matter what your settings, that first screen would be black.

            Hi,

Please use Smart Start update pack 8.1 to update the server + update the server firmware.
Please update us after completing to update and reboot.

Also, remove any anti virus on the server and reboot.
