  • Terminal services on virtual machine

    Hi,
I want to move Terminal services that presently run on Exchange server.
Mister X did that 2 years ago.

I have up to 5 users from different continents that rairly will be log in at the same time.

The apps that they need are: Office 2003 (now it`s on Exchange. Not fun ),
and one client app for Financing server software.

The question. Is it OK to run Terminal Services on Virtual machine. As I mentioned it will never be a big load.
If there is no definite NO for this idea I can assign twice memory on powerful machine.

I have 10 licenses. I know that licensing server in 2003 not required DC.
So I can install licensing server on the same machine.

Also I read some time ago about TS on 2008. I remember a web access feature mentioned. In theory, external users will don`t need vpn access to the network in this case. Right?
Now they access the terminal server by connecting through VPN first.
    How solid is this solution?

    Thanks,
    Michael.

Re: Terminal services on virtual machine

The general answer is: no problem with TS on a VM. I have two of those And judging by the environment you describe (number of users and number of applications) it should work for you too.
Now, by saying "no problem", I don't really mean there will be no problems whatsoever But sounds a pretty easy task to achieve...
Regarding Windows Server 2008, there is that Web connection, but I don't know enough about it to give someone else advices (my servers are 2003).

You can use TS Gateway with OTP/Smartcard solution... Its bad idea to run RDP open to anyone.
Also, Microsoft dont support running Outlook on Exchange and the idea to use DC/SQL/Exchange as TS is bad.

VM - This depand. If you plan to use Hyper-V/Vmware 3.5i on a real server (e.g. HP 380 G5, Dell 2950 III) it sohuld be fine.

        hi!
What is about to use Terminal Services on the same server where you have installed terminal licensing service?
For 5 users it must work perfectly. Hyper-V/VMWare 3.5i will be to much for 5 users

You can install it on the TS but its recommanded to install it on the DC.

            Hi!
He have already installed TS licensing server if I understood right. Of course it's not working if his TS licensing service installed on DC...

But this is the licensing server, not TS itself.
