  • How to combine functions of TS Gateway and TS Session Broker

    Hi,

I like to utitlize the new TS Gateway and TS Session Broker for our environment. I've gone through step-by-step guide from MS and setup both roles on a server. I can load balance with session broker and I can connect to internal resources with gateway with individual services but I failed to find a way to utilize both roles together. Ultimately my goal is to have one or two servers (preferably gateway) with a public address that clients connects to and have session broker distribute the load among different TS servers in the farm. All this should be achieved with session traffics going through gateway when connected to a TS server. Internal resources will be either distributed with RemoteApp or Remote Desktop. The imporatant thing is to not have to present these TS servers with a public address.

From my understanding reading the guides, session broker requires publishing TS server address on DNS and when session broker allocate the client to the proper TS server, the connection is handed off. TS Gateway, on the other hand, handles the session traffic through itself. Is this a simple issue of where the servers (session borker and gateway) are placed to make it work or are these services designed to not work together and I should look for the solution somewhere else? Thanks for any suggestions.

Its working. Gateway server manages the same group of TS servers that are part of the same farm so when gateway server directs client to connect to a TS, TS queries session broker and SB directs client to the best resrouce available TS server or reconnect to disconnected session.

Is the TS using Win 2008 Ent. edition?

No, I'm using 2008 STD for TS servers.

Jonab, what ended up being the fix? I'm having the same problem.

Yuval, what pieces do you believe require Ent edition? Enterprise edition was required with Windows 2003 for Session Directory but it is no longer with 2008. Standard edition is fine.

I guess that you will need to put the TS Gateway in the DMZ (You can use NAT to publish it) and
another server for TS Session Broker.

I can recommended you to use Citrix standard edition and provide a real solution to the Enterprise.

Re: How to combine functions of TS Gateway and TS Session Broker

My issue ended up being DNS related... it is all working now. TS Gateway and TS Web sitting on a single server on my LAN (not DMZ).

And depending on the size of the organization, the added costs of Citrix just aren't worth it. Citrix had huge value years ago, but now TS and Citrix are too close in features to bother with the added expense.

This the first mistake that most of the managers do.... Citrix can save you maintenance time etc.
However, most of the companies doesnt know how to calculate it..

Could you explain what you mean? I am also deciding on either buying citrix or upgrading to 2008 server. I personally plan on having only 2 terminal servers (to start).

                  Thanks,
