  • Cant Connect To Certain PC's Via Remote Desktop

    Hi,

I'm hoping some of you may have some suggestions I can try to resolve my issue. It has to do with remote desktop on Windows XP machines. I have a few computers, that are somewhat stripped down as their default config. i have Admin access to them, but alot of the computers services are disabled, and theres not much installed on them. They're each only used for one purpose, which is basically to run a flash application all day.

For some reason, i just can't remote into these XP desktops. I've gone through the process of checking the box to allow remote users, and selecting which users have access. These computers are not on our domain, and they are on a separate vlan as most other things on the network. I just cant figure out why I can not connect to them using remote desktop. If I connect my laptop to their vlan, I can then remote into my machine fine from other computers on the network (including the other computers on this vlan that can not be connected to). From this vlan segment I can also remote into other computers on the network, like servers. But I just cant get into these machines that are configured with the most basic services and properties.

Could it be that there is a service disabled that Remote Desktop needs? I have tried enabling a bunch of services, but no luck. I thought at first it was an issue with blank passwords, but I created a couple of accounts with passwords, and still no luck. Anything else I should look for? This is driving me nuts!

    Thanks

    JG

When you ping your remote hosts, does ping finds machines?
Did you check firewall status? You need to have avaiable port 3389 on machines which you intend to connect via Remote Desktop
You need Terminal Services to be running, use services MMC to check the status

and just make sure it's XP Pro, not XP Home

Thanks for the responses. The OS is XP Pro, the firewall is disabled, and I can ping all of the machines that I am looking to remote into. The Terminal Services service is running on the computers as well.

Have you tried logging onto the client, log off and then try RDP?
What version of the RD Client are you using?
          1 1 was a racehorse.
          2 2 was 1 2.

Re: Cant Connect To Certain PC's Via Remote Desktop

From the vlan, run: telnet IP 3389
If you dont get answer you may have a third party application block this port

You can use TCP View to review on the XP that the TCP 3389 is waiting for remote calls..

Re: Cant Connect To Certain PC's Via Remote Desktop

The telnet works fine. I tried logging in and out on both, but no dice there either. Not sure what version of RDP is running, but I tried downloading from MS site, and got an error during install saying something along the lines of it already being built in and cant be installed.

When I do try to connect to one of the computers, the rdp program just kind of does a quick blink, and never goes to a login screen.

Re: Cant Connect To Certain PC's Via Remote Desktop

PC's are very basic Dell Optiplex's. Intel Core 2 Duo's, 2Gb RAM, ATI Graphics card. The PC's literally run next to nothing on them. They are basically used to display flash content onto screens located in a different room.

Not much else is installed, no Office, Adobe, not much other than the basics.

Re: Cant Connect To Certain PC's Via Remote Desktop

In the event viewer I am seeing a "...rdpdd.dll failed to load error". Might be the root of the problem. I need to dig around to find out whats causing this, and if indeed it is related.

Yup, stumbled across that same site while I was researching the issue. The reg edit does the trick perfectly.

                        Thanks for the help.
