  • Terminal Server Random Freezes

    Hi,

    Run several Terminal Servers (win2k3 sp2) of which about a week ago most users have complained of freezes for example when opening office apps and files or even opening IE, freeze lasts on average 10 secs then its ok.

    What i have tried;
    Restart, deletion of cached profiles
    came across a ctfmon issue with TS but doesnt make sense as profile reset works even though ctfmon is running.........
    have also tried cprofile awaiting trial........

    What fixes it;
    reseting the users profile.... ie deleting ntuser.dat ( problem with this is i cant do this for alot of people as the amount of manual intervention required to bring them back to original functionality is huge)

    dont know what has changed to cause this but the system is practically unchanged except for a exchange 55 removal.

    thanks for input

    1. What type of hardware/software you own?
    2. What the network eq. that you use?
    3. Do you use a roaming profiles?
    4. Did you tried:

      Re: Terminal Server Random Freezes

      1)servers are IBM dual xeons from two years ago with 8gb ram and win2k3 sp2 enterprise edition.
      2)network is standard gigabit ethernet with users using dumb terminals and pcs problem is occurring on both
      3)yes profiles are stored on network share (file server)
      4)yes this is already installed and have checked for latest version

      thank you for reply

      as i said previously it is strange as the problem only recently started to occur and clearing the profile fixes it i am clueless at the moment.....

        Well... start from update the "servers" to the latest IBM hotfixs, update expert version etc.
        Also, try to uninstall the AV

          Re: Terminal Server Random Freezes

          thanks for the help everyone, well........ yuval14.

          well i have a strange update

          i have worked out through various traffic and process monitors that the reason for the freeze is that every time someone opens a file is that it tries to somehow contact on old dc that is still on the network. example if i unplug this machine the problem appears if i plug it back in the problem goes away.

          i have done alot of searches etc on this but have not found anything in direct relation to the problem have also checked gpo's and any other areas for any old configurations but have not found anything.

          it is very strange as it still works in the end but a small wait is needed.

          thanks for replies

            Hi,

            Thank you for the new information.

            Please use ipconfig /all to verity that you have correct DNS settings.

            Also, please check the host + lmhost files entries.

            You can also check the license server settings on the TS registry (The server could try
            To locate the old license server).
            Best Regards,

              Re: Terminal Server Random Freezes

              DNS settings are correct and the hosts and lmhosts files are unchanged i looked in the winnt\system32\drivers\etc folder.

              license server also is correct though instead of server name entered as specified server i entered the fqdn to see if that helps..........

              thank you for replies

                Re: Terminal Server Random Freezes

                This may seem off-base, but are the Terminal Servers configured to use WINS and looking to the old DC for NetBios name resolution?

                  Re: Terminal Server Random Freezes

                  yes they are configured to use WINS in the ip setting but they have been updated the new ip's.

                  anyone know if there are any gpo settings that could point to historic settings....
                  i have backed the gpo in use through gpmc and did a keyword search in the folder but nothing.... man this problem is annoying

                    Did you checked this GPo settings?

                    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/294785

                    Did you veritied that the old DNS records of the DC has been removed?

                      Re: Terminal Server Random Freezes

                      checked KB article to no avail, GPO's are not configured under that area and the DNS server has one host record of the old DC just like all other domain member PC's.

                      the DNS suffix order is;
                      - domain name.com.au
                      - com.au

                      might just P2V the server and run it as a vmWare image in the background.... although that idea is quite shameful..........

                        Please check if you have a hardware/drivers problems.... You can install the TS on HP 380 G5
                        server and check if this issue occur again
