  • Creating VPN from Terminal server 2003

Hi All first post so hopefully i am in the rigt place and not breaking the rules.

Here is the setup i am running SBS 2003 server as DC with SQL and Exchange. I also run windows 2003 terminal server standard which i have 15 clients connecting with RDP. I have one client that needs to use SABER which is loaded on the terminal server this program wants to create a VPN connection. When logged on as administrator this program works fine, if the administrator executes the program first and creates the vpn the client can the execute it and use it with no problems, but when the client tries to execute the program first it tells them they do not have the prevliges to create a vpn. I am guessing this might be a GPO issue but not to sure. If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

When you create a dialer VPN, you can mark a checkbox (If I dont mistake) that this
dialer can be use by everyone.
Also, I can recommanded that the VPN should be from the firewall and not the TS.

        Hi,

I didnt work with this tool, but if this software use a special VPN (not MS) you might need to:

        1. Contact the vendor to find a nice solution (I guess that you wouldnt be the first that
        report this issue).

        2. Try to add the users to the "Power Users" group.

        3. Try to use a custom runas command so only this software will run by using local
administrator account (dont forget to use GPO to close internet etc.).

          Hi,

Thanks for the relpy i have contacted the vendor and they were no help at all and could not provide a solution, I also tried adding the user to the power users group and still no luck. I will read up on the link you posted and see what i can do with that. Thank you for your help and the link.

If your software is trying to create a Microsoft VPN Connection. Couldnt you just apply a group policy to those users to allow to create / modify network connections. But also in that same policy, disable access to viewing the network connections so they dont go and modify the local area network connection. If not then disregard this.

            Cheers,

            Andrew

              Hi,

There probably is a group policy setting that can be changed to allow the creation of a VPN from the terminal server but there are like 1400 setting in group policy so if anybody knows what policy to change it would be appreciated. Thanks for all your posts.

                User Configuration ->
Administrative Templates -> Network -> Network Connections

                  Hi

Thanks for your posts and sorry for my late reply, after much banging my head against the wall i have worked out what the problem was when creating the VPN from the terminal server. The client needs to have full access to the lmhost file and the host file which is located in windows> system32> drivers> etc> folder.
I hope this helps anyone else trying to do the same. Thank you to yuval and AndrewH for your posts.
