  • Win98 RD client no longer able to connect to XP Pro

I have a client that has a WINDOWS 98SE Laptop. He has been using the laptop
for years to connect to a handful of XP Pro computers using the Win98 RD
    Client.

Suddenly he is getting the message "The client could not connect to the
remote computer ..." on about 50% of the computers he tries to connect to.
These are computers that he was previously able to connect with.

If I try to connect to these unreachable machines using an XP box I am able
    to make the connection.

Nothing has changed on his end, and the connections are actually saved as
shortcuts (I have tried re-creating them on the fly, but this didn't help).
Has some windows update occurred on the remote machines that blocks Win98
    connections?

Any ideas on how to correct this (he doesn't want to upgrade his laptop).

    Thanks

Are the XP machines members of an AD Domain? If so, it's possible that the authentication options have been changed at the server end which would prevent a session negotiation from a legacy client from completing. (i.e. if the policy requires Kerberos authentication, then this cannot be supported by Windows 98 and therefore any Windows 98 machine trying to connect will be refused).

      Thanks for your reply.

Most of the machines are not members of a domain. In one case I can tell you 100% that nothing changed or was installed on a particular XP box that was previously working (except maybe automatic Windows updates).

I don't know then; as M$ have dropped support for Win9x a long time ago now, maybe one of the updates has a side-effect of preventing legacy authentication?

Did you tried to use RDP 6.0 client?

              Please use:

              http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925876

Is this issue occur on the LAN it self? Is the firewall on the XP is off?
Can you disable any antivirus software and check this issue again?

              and review:

              http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329896

              http://www.chicagotech.net/troubleshootingts.htm

and also try to uss Telnet command to TCP 3389

              telnet computer_ip 3389

                Thanks for your reply.

                1. I can connect via Telnet on port 3389.

                2. Same problem on the LAN, Win98 laptop wont connect to "bad" machines. XP Computers can connect

                3. Windows firewall and AV is OFF.

                4. RD V6 Only works with XP

                5. I have just confirmed that this is a Windows 98 issue. Found a old W98 machine in storage and it has the same issue, will only connect to SOME machines via RD.

The big question is what update caused this and how to reverse or correct.

Correction is easy. Update client's laptop to XP. Windows 98 is 9 years old now.
                  1 1 was a racehorse.
                  2 2 was 1 2.
                  1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
                  2 2 1 1 2

The way I see it, the client has a choice.

                      1. Remain with an unsupported OS, and accept that he cannot use RDP to all XP machines,

                      - or -

                      2. Accept Windows XP (the GUI can be customised to look like '98 ) and be able to do his work effectively.

These are the only two sensible choices IMO - neither you, nor Microsoft, are in a position to spend a larger and larger slice of your working time supporting this single '98 machine which is just going to get more and more difficult to integrate into your evolving environment.

In fact, you could probably arrange for a rebuild of his machine and install XP without him being able to tell, if he's the sort of user who doesn't investigate things too much... just make sure that all GUI customisations are set to the legacy style and he'll probably not notice the difference! (also, TweakUI can be used to make the machine "auto log on" with his user ID).

Any way to turn on logging at 'server' end to see why it is failing?
