  • Terminal Server - Win2k3 Server

    Hi Guys,

I have a win 2003 Server, which functions as Terminal Server for remote users, connecting from home/internal users.
We kinda not using the real function of that, and i want to allow 2 new users to connect the server from home, after they connect with VPN to our network.
What will be the best way to allow them open Outlook, and local resources on the server, with out allowing them to reboot the server, and so on?
i know i should use GPO with restrictions i would like to hear what's your offer to do about it, with restricting them as well.

    Thanks,
    Retaliator.
    Thanks & Regards

    That shouldn't be a problem.
You have in the GPO -> Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> User rights Assignment the setting for Shutdown the system. Just be certain that you make these two users part of a group that does not show there.

      Thanks, Sorin,
This is like that by default, as they are not part of local Administrators group, they can't shutdown the computer
Only Power users, Administrators and i think Backup Operators can.
      Usually,
you don't put RDP users as local admins of the TS server, right?
How else can i put more restrictions on the server?

Well, you are right, of course. But if your TS server has the default settings, why are you worried about it? And no, it's not a good idea to give TS users Administrative rights...
You can actually deny them from doing anything. What did you think of?

          I have no idea YET
Will it be wise to install Office 2003 on the Server, as i need them to have Outlook , Calendar, Word, Excell, and so, and it won't be nice using OWA
Or how does it usually work with RDP users?
If i could, i'd give them a laptop and they could use that and no need RDP, but this is not allowed because of policy in the company.

Using RDP does have it's advantages, so don't give up so fast...
I think you should design the user's environment, based on the map of their needs, and then you will be able to use GPO on the TS server and users to implement that environment.
From that point, we'll be able to assist you
BTW, there's no problem of installing Office2003 on the server.
