  • How to move user account / profile to NEW TS Box

I have an existing TS box with 100+ users. Working great. I need to migrate these users from the TS-01 box to the TS-02 box. How can I easily do that without having to have them login, setup outlook, etc. all over again?

I want to migrate / move all of their settings, favorites, etc. along with files, shortcuts, +++ over to the new TS box.

My users are dumb. They cannot setup an outlook profile. When I first set this up a few years ago I had to create each profile by logging on as them and configuring everything. Don't want to do that again.

So, how is it done? Suggestions welcome.

    Thanks,

    Tim

You can download the MS tool for this, called moveuser.exe.

      PaulH:
Moveuser doesn't seem to be one that moves the profile from one server to another. From what I am reading it is:
moveuser.exe changes the security of a profile from one user to another.
This allows the account domain to change, and/or the user name to change.

There isn't an option for "moving" the user to a different server.

Oh, I'm surprised, I thought you could use the /c: switch and specify the remote computer name as the target to move it to. Keep the source user and the destination user the same, so can't you move the profile from UserA to UserA on the second TS?

        Does that work?

Re: How to move user account / profile to NEW TS Box

I've tried moveuser numerous times over the weekend but it just doesn't seem to do the task. It almost amazes me that their isn't a specific tool for moving users between TS boxes. I even tried USMT 3.0, no luck.

          Thanks,

and why not use folder redirection from GPO?

Re: How to move user account / profile to NEW TS Box

              I support 2 Windows 2003 Terminal Servers.
I have them load balanced and set to use roaming terminal server profiles.

It works great. I just copied all the user profiles in Documents and Settings to a network share and point each user profile to their respective profile.
              (something like: //servername/profileshare/%username%)

You can test it easily with a test account (or your account).
The beauty of this is I can remove an old terminal server or introduce a new one seamlessly to the user.
