  • set default printer IP address/machine wise in thin client environment

    Hi:

We have deployed a thin client environment in our office using win 2k3 and active directory therein.

Our office building is quite large and users need to move from room to room and log into their account using the available diskless workstation there. So far so good. At times, they need to print using the printer connected to the workstation.

Is it possible that where ever a user logs in from, his default printer gets set to the printer attatched to that particular workstation where he has logged in from (instead of manually selecting the printer)? This is requried since there are over 50 printers and identifying/locating the particular printer takes a while.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards,
    Neeraj

Did you tried to etup a logon script that set the required settings?

Check the scripting section -- there is a recent thread there with the script examples you need

i checked the scripting section and no script for what we need........only scripts to map network drives.......

this is a thin client / dumb terminal enviroment, and we want each client to be automatically set with it's own attached printer....

Re: set default printer IP address/machine wise in thin client environment

What kind of thin clients are you using?
And with what kind of RDP clients are they connecting?
You should be able to map the local printer in the "Local Resources" part of the RDP client (if it has such) and it should solve your problem.

well the thin terminals are WYSE terminals...........and we are connecting via ICA connections (citrix)......

it woudl be good if there was a script that would assign the locally attached printer, as in LPT1.

As far as I remember (and I am not a Citrix specialist), your default printer should be mapped automatically when you connect to the Citrix session.
Should we understand that this is not happening in your case? Maybe the WYSE terminals do not install the printers? Have you tested that the thin client sees the printer?

Re: set default printer IP address/machine wise in thin client environment

yeh most of the times they autocreate a printer, but that is not really helpful with some programs..........ok with word, etc you can easily select the printer which is autocreated.........

but with some software packages we use, we have to assign a printer to each user, and that is practically impossible with autocreated printers as they autodelete at logoff..
