  • Force an app to open on a specific Citrix server?

    Currently we have 7 Citrix servers, Our end users need to be able to open up Word 2003, hit the email button, and send an email. Simple on a local copy of Office 2003, sure. Our problem is when they open up Outlook 2003, there's no guarantee that it'll open it up on the same server as Word. Because of automatic load balancing, if they happen to open up each app on different servers, you can't hit the email button on the Word toolbar to send the document. If by chance (read: load balancing) they are both on the same server, then they can send the document easily.

    The only work around we have currently is for the end user to open up a new email, then attach the word file. So, is there a way (via a script or a setting) to have Word open up on the same server that their Outlook is open on, and vice versa, or to have the servers communicate with each other, so that if they have Word open up on server 1, and Outlook open up on server 5, that they can hit the email button in word, and it'll send the email out just fine?

    Hopefully that made sense

    Any suggestions / comments would be greatly appreciated.

          Do you use Citrix enterprise or advanced edition? If you use Standard edition you may problem to work with the load balance..

            Totally forgot about this thread, sorry!

            One of our other techs just came up with a solution for this. He made a macro, added it as a toolbar, and saved it into a normal.dot. We're pushing it to the Citrix Profile folders of those who are having the problem.

            This way, if they hit the email button, and it says Outlook isn't open, they just hit this button, and it opens up Outlook on the same Citrix server that they are using Word on. Then they can minimize Outlook (which may be able to be done with a switch in the macro), hit the email button, and voila! It works.

            Here's the macro code:

            Code:
            Sub Outlook()
            Shell ("c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE")
            End Sub
