  • How to rebuild a missing GPO on all servers?

    Hi,

We have GPO completely missing from our AD.
We are running Server 2000 (Main DC) and Server 2003 DC on remote site.

GPO dissapeared from all servers at some time when an old 2000 Main DC crashed and was rebuilt into 2003 DC. All files under SYSVOL\sysvol\domain name are missing. Only 'DO_NOT_REMOVE_NtFrs_PreInstall_Directory' folder is there.

We've been working fine so far for few months except that Application log is filled by messages like 'Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO The file must be present at the location <>. (). Group Policy processing aborted. '

How can I rebuild all the missing directories and files under SYSVOL?

    Thanks in advance,

    Alex Liberov.

No, we didn't have backups at the time GPO dissapeared. We backup now, though.

So are you missing the GPO's??

If you are then i know of no way you can get them back without rebuilding.

You MAY get away with doing a repair.

Just a footnote to this alexanderl. I take it you are not talking about a default policy, yes Default policy' s can be recovered but it is a "return to factory settings" type of thing, so you'd need to configure them again.

wullieb1 is correct there is no way to recover a lost GPO with no backup.
You will have to start from scratch with it.
          The Univurse is still winning!

W2K AD, WSUS, RIS 2003. ISA also AVG Server

            Thanks,
I did a serarch for SYSVOL in MS Knowlegebase and found that all I need to get the 'default' GPO is to recreate the directory tree structure.

It looks like it will only work if you have an intact copy of the sysvol on a DC. Since the GPOs are missing from all the servers I don't think this will work.
