  • enable users to change active desktop

    hello,

where on earth is the setting that lets users change their background to a standard image if an HTML page has been pushed out via GPO

so they have the page first off, but then get to change to a picture of their choice

    Thanks in advance

active desktop is enabled, as i am pushing out a HTML page as the background via GPO
but i won't to be able to let users remove it to what they want later on.
Can't for the life of me remember where this setting is

Do you want the HTML page pushed out each time they log on or just the first time?

just for the first time would do, either or really
just HTML to begin with, and then they can decide when they wanna change it to an image or something

May just want to configure a default user profile. You can set the background, active desktop content, mapped drives, printers, folders, files, etc.

As far as the content you're pushing out, unless you have settings that specifically prevent it, the user should be able to alter his/her desktop. If they can't, you can run RSoP to see what's being applied to the user.

Re: enable users to change active desktop

              hrmm,
Still can 't get this to move.
run RsoP and nothing preventing users from doing this.

Just want them to have the HTML background when the first logon (when GPO is applied) and then they can change to jpeg or whatever like normal when they want.

This is completely greyed out at present with no way to change it.

              Appreciate any help

edit - it turns out after going right through this, that you cannot change the background at all when you have active desktop enabled and an HTML page set as background. Surely this has to be able to change??!??!

Re: enable users to change active desktop

What is the setting you're using to push out the HTML page?

If you use the "Add/Delete Items" they should be able to change it. If you use "Active Desktop Wallpaper" then the users will not be able to change the Wallpaper.

If you're wanting to set the wallpaper (and not just a desktop item) then maybe a logon script would work. That way users would be able to change their wallpaper.
                Google is a great tool

Re: enable users to change active desktop

the setting is yeah using "active desktop wallpaper" , and its just pointing to a share, with the index.html to display on the desktop.

which "add/delete Items" fuction are you talking about.

All i want to do, but not sure if its possible, is have an HTML desktop active, but allowing users to change it when they want, to an image, or whatever.

                  thanks

edit - have just done that add/delete thing, which is worked, but it brings up a line, letting you change the size of it, and then behind it it shows the location that you are getting the page from, in an explorer looking window

Re: enable users to change active desktop

OK, I think you're just wanting to configure the "Wallpaper" of the desktop. Here's a description of Active Desktop

I am not aware of any GPO settings that will allow you to set the wallpaper and users to change it. But you can use a logon script to set the wallpaper and then users will be able to change it. You can specify logon scrips in a GPO by going to "User Configuration\Windows Settings\Scripts".

Here's a simple script to set the wallpaper.

Be sure to test it before you deploy it.

Re: enable users to change active desktop

thanks for all the help Jeremy,
I have it sorted now with the add/delete gpo and then specified some settings, so it spans across the desktop and also allows them to change it.
