  • 64/32 Bit Shortcuts

We recently rolled out a web based program that our end users need to access using 32bit version of IE. We currently have a mix environment of Windows 7 32 and 64 bit machines. I created 2 group policy shortcut (Users Configuration>Windows Settings>Shortcuts) both using targeted items. What I just recently found out that for some reason some of our 32bit machines indeed do have the WOW6432Node, which I think is the reason why the shortcuts is not working on these specific machines. Is there something I can do so that these shortcuts get created and stick through GPO?

The shortcuts I currently have created through GPO are as follows:

    Shortcut1 -
    Target Path - C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
    Common Targeting -
the registry key HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node does not exist
    Match Type - Key Exists
    Hive - HKEY_Local_Machine
    Key Path - Software\Wow6432Node

    Shortcut2 -
    Target Path - C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
    Common Targeting -
    the registry key HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node exists
    Match Type - Key Exists
    Hive - HKEY_Local_Machine
    Key Path - Software\Wow6432Node

Why not go direct to the reg key that states the Processor Architecture?

    Code:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment\PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE
    * Shamelessly mentioning "Don't forget to add reputation!"

      or use 'Environment variable';

      IF %ProgramFiles(x86)% IS C:\Program Files (x86)
      Target Path - C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

      IF %ProgramFiles(x86)% IS NOT C:\Program Files (x86)
      Target Path - C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
