  • Lock computer after 10 minutes?

    Hi,

    I'm trying to find a way to lock up users computers if they've been idle for 10 minutes.
    The idea is not to use screen-saver at all if possible.

    Any suggestions?

    Poly.

    I was looking for something like that a number of months ago.

    Unless there is a third-party tool or you do some very fancy scripting, the best option is a password-protected screensaver.

    If you do find the feature built into Windows which does it, please do let me know.

      Hi,
      this can be easily done by Screen Saver Settings .

          So...

          is thete a chance of doing that trough GPO without screen saver or only by third party tools?

          I already know about the screen saver option, I try to do it as simple as possible, 10 minutes are gone and the user is idle? lock the computer.
          I don't like the screen saver idea

              Never said that there's something wrong with it, just that it's not a favorite option and I rather use the good old lock computer without having to see the screen saver.

              I'm just trying to figure out if it is possible in a different way through GPO without screen saver and without third party tools

                Re: Lock computer after 10 minutes?

                i was looking for something like this over the summer, didn't get very far,

                basically i work in a school and we wanted to do this on the teachers desktops,

                the problem with the screen saver is that you have to tell all the teachers the password, and to be honest i know what some of them are like and it would only be a matter of days before the students figure out what the password was.

                the closest i got fining a sript that creates a shortcut to "lock computer" on the desktop,

                Save as lock.vbs

                On Error Resume Next

                'get main objects/variables
                set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject ( "WScript.Shell" )
                strDesktop = WshShell.SpecialFolders ( "AllUsersDesktop" )
                Set oSCut = WshShell.CreateShortcut ( strDesktop & "\Lock Workstation.lnk" )

                'set shortcut properties
                oSCut.Description = "Locks the workstation for the current user"
                oSCut.IconLocation = "%windir%\System32\shell32.dll, 47"
                oSCut.TargetPath = "%windir%\System32\Rundll32.exe"
                oSCut.Arguments = "user32.dll,LockWorkStation"
                oSCut.WorkingDirectory = "%windir%"

                'save shortcut
                oSCut.Save

                  Hmm i thought on 2000/XP you could use the screensaver to lock the workstation so that the person logged on would have to use their password not a generic one....

                    The user enters there own password into the login box when the screensaver goes off do they not.

                      It seems we are agreed on that one then!

                        No, you're not agreed! Your statement is correct Tony, the password asked for by the screen saver _is_ the windows password. At least, this is the case for all builtin screensavers. A screensaver does not have its own password.

                        (well, perhaps on W9x, but not on an OS of this millenium)

                          sorry my mistake about the password,
                          must have got mixed up with something else that had a generic password.

                            Re: Lock computer after 10 minutes?

                            This thread got me thinking. And as an aspiring VB .Net developer i thought... "this is possible to solve"

                            So here it is:

                            Lock-Workstation-Screensaver v1.0

                            Copy to c:\windows\system32 and set this as your screensaver. It will lock the workstation after the specified time... but without putting a screen saver on the screen. Give version 1.0 a go and let me know what you think.

                            Thanks

                            Chris
