  • Does Allow log on through Remote Desktop Services GP Work

    Hi,

I have some users that I wanted to allow to connect through Remote Desktop. I added the users to a group and then added to group to 'Computer Configuration'->Policies->'Windows Settings'->'Security Settings'->'Local Policies'->'User Rights Assignment'->'Allow log on through Remote Desktop Services' in active directory. These users are however still unable to log on.

If I run 'rsop.msc' on the workstation the policy is present.

Now if I instead go into remote settings on the workstation and add the same user group everything works OK.

I had thought that adding the user group through this policy would be the same as adding it through the remote settings on the workstation.

What does 'Allow log on through remote desktop services' do if not this?

    Thanks

Off-topic slightly, but if you want to centrally control this, you can use Restricted Groups to add the AD user group to the Remote Desktop Users group on the workstations.

Thanks for the reply. I have not used restricted groups before. I will look into them.

Any idea why the "Allow log on through remote desktop session" does not do anything?

What operating systems are you running and are you trying to connect to a workstation or a Server?
        1 1 was a racehorse.
        2 2 was 1 2.
        1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
        2 2 1 1 2

The domain controller is a server 2008 R2 system.
The session host is a server 2008 R2 system.

I don't know if this is relevant, but the systems are not configured as RD session hosts. In other words we are using the free administrative remote desktop connection, and not the RDS CALs.

          Thanks

Thank you. Restricted groups successfully accomplished the task.

Still no idea why 'Allow log on through Remote Desktop Services' didn't work though.
