  • can't hide items in start menue win XP

    Hi,

I'm applying GPO from win 2003 R2 to a clients running xp os. i have disabled all the items in the start menue via GPO. but 3 items still unable to remove if i did not force the clasic start menue:

Run- Printers and faxes- control panel.

If i forced using the clasic menue, then control panel will be deleted but i still have 2 items:

    Run - Program.

    Any help is appreciated

    Hi,

have you tried the following steps
    Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies \Explorer
    Name: NoRun
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 1

NoRun corresponds to the Remove Run menu from Start Menu Group Policy at:
    User Configuration
    AdministrativeTemplates
    Start Menu & Taskbar

For hiding printer and faxes check this

      Dear v-2nas,

I will follow this link http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.c...1272785&page=3 and try to create the ADM. but regarding the RUN, it's not logical to modify the reg key on every machine (i have more than 2000 PC).

        Hi,

Check this, actually you can convert registery change to custom adm template and use as GPO.

NoRun corresponds to the Remove Run menu from Start Menu Group Policy at:
        User Configuration
        AdministrativeTemplates
        Start Menu & Taskbar
        Thanks & Regards

I noticed one thing. if i added the adm to the user setting. then i can see the value (startmenue) created in the computer setting under the administrative tools. is this normal.

            Hi,

if you modify the registry key manually on test machine. Does the changes take an effect

"I noticed one thing. if i added the adm to the user setting. then i can see the value (startmenue) created in the computer setting under the administrative tools. is this normal."

can you post the screenshot for this ^

Try you adm template on test machine first
            made some corrections

            CLASS MACHINE
            CATEGORY "StartMenu"
POLICY "Hide Printers and Faxes on Start Menu"
            KEYNAME "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explore r\Advanced"
EXPLAIN "Enabling this setting will hide the Printers and Faxes icon on the Start Menu. Disabling this setting will show the Printers and Faxes on the Start Menu.Setting this to 'Not Configured' will keep the previous registry setting."

            VALUENAME "Start_ShowPrinters"
            VALUEON NUMERIC "0"
            VALUEOFF NUMERIC "1"
            END POLICY
            END CATEGORY

and if it doesn't work you can try the below option

Please refer to creating Custom adm templates
            http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...displaylang=en

            A bit of reading though

Re: can't hide items in start menue win XP

Going back to the original post, are you saying that you have enabled the "Remove Run menu from Start Menu" GP setting but that your users still have the Run option in their start menu? If so, then I would suggest you investigate why your setting isn't taking effect before trying to engineer a workaround.
