  • How do we deal with software update

    Hello Team,

I wonder how do most IT guys deal with client software update with medium size company and remote location etc..
software update meaning, Java, flash, adobe etc... I have a hard time to deal with this because we have to do it one by one
is there anything via GPOs that we can do or control?

    Thanks,
    HN

A well behaved application will have an MSI file (with MSP files for patches) that can be rolled out through GPO. If not, you can create one using a range of free install packages and deploy via GPO.

OF course, if you have the budget, SCCM will handle this for you.

How big is "medium" in terms of PCs, servers and IT staff?

Re: How do we deal with software update

We have 1000 of clients laptops/desktops and they reside in a multilple remote location and running windows xp and windows 7. each location have atleast 1 DC and all DCs are in the same forest.
There is no IT staffs at the remote location.. so everything has to done remotely..

The issue Im having issues.. let say Java, Flash and adobe, even we disabled under admin when the image is deployed but when user logon the update wasnt disabled and keep prompting them to update it or cancel.

I want know if anyone else in a simular situation and how they deal with it.

      Thanks,
      HN

Java, Acrobat and Flash can all be deployed and updated by GPO. The java and acrobat update settings are not sticky however. Those update popups can be annoying, but it is probably some registry key. I stilll have the plane to search for the right values, but time is not always on my side.

Re: How do we deal with software update

Though updating Workstations and servers on network seems very easy task, but we need to plan before rolling any update. I have test pc and server that I use to test updates before deployment. I use WSUS for windows update installation. For updating Java, Adobe etc I use GPO. For large organisations, SMS is the best.

Right, that's why I linked to their guides which cover GPO. May have a solution for him in there.
